Principal’s Message for October
The month of September has come to an end, and with that, the first month of the school year has been completed. Students and teachers have settled into their classes and have begun the school year in earnest.
The month of October brings about the holiday of Thanksgiving which is a time to spend with family and friends, to share a large meal, and to reflect on what we are thankful for.
I would like to extend my thanks to each and every member of the Maple Hill School community for making the first month a successful one. We were able to come together as a school in a school-based activity where we experienced Flyover Canada and got to see some of the many beautiful sights in and around downtown Vancouver.
In this issue in the newsletter, you can see a more detailed summary of the Flyover Canada activity as well as classroom and student spotlights. Later in October, look out for our Halloween Activity which will take place on Halloween Day, October 31st which is on a Monday this year.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all and have a happy Halloween.
Eric Di Nozzi
Principal

Classroom Spotlight:
Mr. Lee’s Class
Hello everyone,
I primarily teach in the humanities, so one of the keys focuses for my classes is looking at current events and seeing how they may be related to what we are studying. As the events and aftermath of Hurricane Fiona unfold before our eyes, it provides a good case study for government intervention following natural disasters, giving us a comparison point to previous events. Students have been exploring how this event can relate to what they are learning in their classes.
~Mr. Lee
Classroom Spotlight:
Mr. Bardell’s Class
It’s been an exciting return to the school year. One of the standouts of the first month took place in the new History of Math 11 class. Students were learning about the number systems of ancient people. The students were able to look back to 4000 years ago where they were able to do math exercises on clay tablets with the Babylonian sexagesimal (base 60) number system. Also, I am working with both the Fitness and eSports club where with fitness we have been meeting regularly in the mornings exercising and with eSports we have been meeting on the virtual battlefield.
Student of the Month:
David Ke
Each month, I am going to take the time to honour a student who has stood out with their contributions to the community. The first student I want to acknowledge for their contributions is David Ke. David is a student who has demonstrated a determined work ethic regarding his studies and has also been involved with getting clubs up and running. David also was one of several students to run for student council and was able to win a Member at Large position with the student council.
Congratulations David and thank you for all of your hard work.
Field Trip:
Flyover Canada
The whole school went together on the Canada Line down to Canada Place to experience the sights and sounds of the waterfront and to partake in the Flyover Canada virtual experience. Students were able to see the sights and sounds of Canada as well as the local downtown area.
