PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

To the Maple Hill School Community:

November left us with snow on the ground and December looks to be starting with some early snow as well. November was a busy month for Maple Hill School as students had to complete their midterm assessments and receive their first term report cards. Certain students also completed their provincial assessments which are required to graduate right before taking their school-based assessments. Managing that many assessments can be challenging so well done to all for completing that challenge.

November also saw a couple of field trips for students. Art students were able to visit the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden in Vancouver to learn about some of the early Chinese history in Vancouver and to create some art pieces using the garden as inspiration. While that was only for the art students, the whole school was able to go out for a sports activity where we visited the Vancouver Curling Club and learned how to curl.

December will be busy for students as well as they are hard at work on completing their PBL assignments as well as getting ready for the final push to finals that will happen in January.

Before we leave for the holiday break, there will be a holiday activity on December 16 to celebrate the coming holiday season and the new year. I wish you all the best and make sure that you are all aware of the school procedures for closing due to inclement weather.

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT

Ms. Kienitz’s Class

In New Media 10 students worked in groups using techniques learned from print advertising and storyboarding the create unique magazines on various student-led topics. Students in English Composition 11 wrote their own “Coming-to” stories in the style of those studies in “The Marrow Thieves” novel. In Grade 12 English, students continue practicing their expository, persuasive, narrative, and reflective writing through personal responses to the novel “The Alchemist”.

Ms. Yang’s Class

This month, my students went on a field trip to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver, where they applied concepts from art history to reality by learning about the cultural heritage and design philosophy of the garden. Each student created their own ink painting inspired by the sights of the garden and classical Chinese painting techniques. Great work, everyone!

 

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Carax Chu

Carax is the student of the month for November. Carax stood out from the rest of the student body with producing an excellent video in his English class where he demonstrated how to create a movie poster complete with proper editing and voice work. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed Carax. Great work!

 

MAPLE HILL SCHOOL DOLLAR WINNER

We have begun allowing students to deposit their hard-earned Maple Hill School dollars so that they don’t lose it. The student who deposited the most amount of money was Simon Yang! Great work Simon on practicing English! Students, please remember to deposit your money with me so I can keep track and you don’t lose your hard-earned dollars!
